The Thomasites

25 June 2011

Thomasites and their students in Benguet.

Between 1901 and 1902, 1,074 American teachers were sent by the United States government to the Philippines. Named after the USS Thomas, the ship which transported the last batch of expatriated educators, the Thomasites sought to establish a new public school system, to teach basic education and to train Filipino teachers, with English as the medium of instruction.

We invite family member and those with connections to these pioneering teachers to take part in The Thomasites genealogy and family history project on Geni.com.

Hi Patrick. I sourced the list above from a book on the Thomasites. The original group runs to approximately 1,000 and I have not had the chance to create biographies for all of them. I do not have data on Maria Gilman yet; but will post it here as soon as I do. :)

Hi, Patrick. When Maria first came in 1902, she was stationed as a teacher in Rosario, Cavite. I recently found reference to her in another document (http://bit.ly/LdB8jT) dated 1908 — which lists all of the civil servants in the Philippines. It indicated that she was earning an annual salary of USD 2,800 (which is a more than double what a teacher makes — USD 1,200) and that she was assigned to Fort McKinley (a military station that oversees South Luzon). The term “Post Master-Fort McKinley” — was spelled out beside her name. It is unclear to me if that was her new assignment or if her salary was simply routed to the post office. The link only shows a preview of the Official Roster unfortunately; so one would have to find the original docs to make sure. Hope this helps!

    Mona,

I am very interested in receiving more information on the Thomasites, especially one in particular — Harry T. Edwards. I was named after him, my great-grandfather. I’ve been working on our family tree and I’m wondering if you have information on him. I know he is from Benton Pennsylvania. A lot of his letters are still in the local library–I’m told. Anyway, just wondering if you could help.

    -Harry

Thanks for the visit, Harry! I would have to check if your great-grandfather arrived as a Thomasite; but I am certain that he served many years as the Director for Agriculture in the Philippines during the American Occupation. He made contributions in the mass production and commercial application of Manila hemp. He even developed a variation of the plant which would be able to grow in the Western hemisphere! I found books he wrote on agriculture and government documents that referred to him — http://bit.ly/Ldv2Aa. One even mentioned his genealogy — http://bit.ly/Ldv9vF. You can only see the preview in these links; but you should be able find the books (especially the insular reports) in the Library of Congress.

You were named after a great man! :D

    Hello Mona,

It’s very exciting for me to find this site because both of my grandfathers were American teachers who were among the Thomasites. My mother’s dad is James O’Hara, and my father’s dad is John Jones Carl. I believe that my Grandfather James arrived in the Philippines in 1901 and my Grandfather John arrived a little later, perhaps 1904 or 1905. When I first began learning a little about the Thomasites, I was especially excited because I also am a teacher — the only one in my immediate family.

Over the past couple of years I have had some success on ancestry.com tracing my European roots, but have had no luck at all tracing the Filipino side past my grandmothers. I am always hopeful that I will find out much more about this side of my family.

    Thanks so much,
    Maria Theresa Carl

I believe the Edmund J. Gibbons noted as being from (San Fernando, La Union) is my great grand uncle Edmund “Eddie” Jackson Gibbons, born 1873 or 1877 in Gasconade County, Missouri. He was the son of Edmond Cross Gibbons and Martha McMillian Gibbons. A note in our family history says : Edmund left Missouri in 1898 going to New Mexico, where he taught before going to the Phillipines in 1901 as a teacher in the Bureau of Education, where he spent 38 years. He never returned to this country. He is buried at Tarlac Civic Cemetery in the Phillipines.” I would like to know the location of his burial site and to have the records amended to show his correct birth place and genealogy if possible. This is an amazing story and must have been quite an adventure for the teachers. Thank you for posting it.

Hi Mary. The place after the name is NOT his birthplace but the town in the Philippines where he was stationed. Thank you for the inputs on your Uncle Edmund. May I include his mini-bio here? http://angkangpilipino.com/2011/06/21/bios-of-notable-thomasites/. The early 1900s is my favorite era to research!

Tarlac is a province several hours north of Metro Manila, by car. The capital is Tarlac City. This article (http://tarlachs71.com/about_tarlac_high_school.php) says that a historical marker at the Tarlac City High School names him as the first principal. Not sure how many public cemeteries there are in Tarlac. You would probably need local help to identify the location of his resting place.

Thank you for the quick response and the explanation of the place names. You may create a mini bio using my information. I also have a picture of Edmund in Missouri and a picture of his passport. How can I send those pictures to you?

I found your site today and have a correction to make: You have listed “Theodore E. Borden” but in fact it is Thomas E (Eugene) Borden. He married another Thomasite, Katharine Myrta Young, in 1907 and they stayed on until 1917, and 3 children were born in San Fernando, Pampangas (one of which is my Mom). I’m just going through a huge box of letters written from the Philippines to the U.S., which describe living conditions, teaching conditions, people met, and food prices, clothing and housing. So far I have read letters written from the steamship Thomas, Surigao, San Fernando, and transcribed a few. Only about 5% read so far!
Thanks for the work you do.

I am doing research on the american teachers in San Miguel, Bulacan. I notice in your did not mention about those assigned in our town. My I inquire if you come across about FRED T.LAWRENCE, an american soldier who teach, appointed Principal, supervisor and established a private high school of the town. Do you have anything about him? Anticipating your reply the soonest.
